Denmark confirms itself in being the best market of European Union for the electric cars, and the second in Europe after Norway – which is turning into an impressive 100% electric fleet.
Denmark’s shift toward electric vehicles reached a new milestone in September 2024, with EVs accounting for an impressive 57% of all new car sales. For the fifth consecutive month, electric cars have outsold traditional petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles combined.
Cars in Denmark are doing well
Looking at the third quarter of 2024 (July 1 to September 30), 21,882 new electric cars were sold in Denmark, a significant increase from 14,645 in the same period last year. This nearly 50% growth illustrates the booming interest in EVs, with 55% of all new vehicle registrations in the quarter being electric.
But in addition to an appealing range of models offered by car manufacturers, the Danish tax rules have played a crucial role in accelerating this transition.
This is totally in contrast compared to the big markets of Europe: we know good that Germany is struggling due to Volkswagen’s crisis, but also Italy is facing a -11,4% of sold cars in September 2024 compared to 2023, due to Fiat’s collapse (-43,41%, for the first time is not the first brand in its home country) and Stellantis’ problems in general.
Only 2 cars in the Top10 are not electric
Among the best-selling EVs, Tesla’s Model Y remains the undisputed leader. Other popular models include the Skoda Enyaq iV, Tesla Model 3, and Volkswagen ID.4. A surprise entry is the Ford Explorer, which has quickly gained popularity.

Denmark surpasses 300,000 electric vehicles
In a significant development for the country’s green transition, Denmark’s total number of electric vehicles on the road surpassed 300,000 as of October 1, 2024. This milestone was reached just nine months after hitting the 200,000 mark and follows a steady increase from the 100,000 electric vehicles recorded a little over a year ago.
However, many experts expressed concerns about the planned tax increases from 2026, warning that they could slow the current momentum if they aren’t carefully managed. Other countries, such as Germany and Sweden, have seen a dip in EV sales after reducing their financial incentives, something Denmark aims to avoid.
Tesla Continues to Dominate the Danish EV Market
Tesla holds a commanding presence in Denmark, with nearly 25% of the 300,007 electric vehicles being either a Model Y or Model 3. In comparison, Volkswagen’s three most popular models—the ID.4, ID.3, and ID.5—collectively account for 35,868 vehicles.
