The MG ZS was one of the first affordable electric cars to captivate Scandinavian drivers when it launched back in 2020. While the model has since fallen behind in a rapidly advancing market, a new ZS is set to arrive early next year. However, this latest version marks a shift away from the fully electric trend, as MG introduces a hybrid drivetrain for the ZS.
That said, MG hasn’t entirely abandoned the idea of a compact electric ZS. A new model designed for the European market is already in the works, drawing on the foundation of the popular MG4 – and here it is. Named the MG ES5, it remains to be seen whether it will carry the ZS name when it arrives in Europe. As noted, the ES5 is based on the MG4, and therefore shares no technical roots with the new petrol-powered MG ZS. It has also grown, adding 162 mm to its length, reaching 4,476 mm, which places it firmly in the compact electric crossover segment.
525 km of range!
As for the heart of the European MG ES5, we don’t have details yet.
However, the Chinese version has been revealed with a 62 kWh battery, delivering 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque.
According to Chinese measurements, it boasts a range of 525 km (CLTC), though the European WLTP measurement is expected to provide a more realistic and typically lower figure.
The European MG ES5 will be officially unveiled next year, where we’ll learn more about its battery size and whether it will continue to carry the ZS name.
It will face stiff competition from new compact electric models like the Škoda Elroq, Kia EV3, and Volvo EX30 – making the battle for dominance in this segment a fierce one!
