Highly anticipated, with rumors circulating online for at least three years, the Ford Puma Gen-E has been officially unveiled in Rome and will arrive in the Danish and Scandinavian market in the first half of 2025.
The electric version of Ford’s crossover retains most of its design, though with notable updates to its stance and front aesthetics. It aims to compete with well-regarded battery-powered cars, most notably the Volvo EX30, but starts at a lower price: from ca 240,000 DKK for the base version to 270,000 DKK for the premium trim (the Volvo currently starts at 284,900 DKK).
Like all modern Fords, designed to elevate the brand’s perception, the Puma Gen-E features intriguing elements, particularly in its technical setup. Let’s explore it further.
A Mustang Mach-E inspired design
The images in this article are official, as the presentation event—a private, almost “secret” meeting with select journalists—did not allow photography. The visuals capture the vehicle well, which doesn’t stray far from the existing Puma design, especially given the model’s popularity.
The most visible changes are at the front, where the grille is sealed due to the absence of a radiator. A smaller vent on the bumper serves for battery cooling.
Borrowing from the Mustang Mach-E, the Puma Gen-E incorporates a nearly hexagonal grille design, establishing a link with Ford’s electric icons.
The headlights remain unchanged, featuring a new LED signature resembling a claw in the lower section, while their oval shape is a nod to the original 1990s Puma.
New wheel designs include a two-tone finish on the Premium version, with 17-inch wheels on the base model and 18-inch wheels on the Premium. At the rear, the “PUMA” lettering is spaced out, and the bumper has a slightly sportier body-colored design.
Overall, the vehicle’s aesthetic is “familiar,” appealing to both current Puma owners ready to switch to electric and new buyers.
Even more space!
The interior builds on updates introduced in the 2024 facelift, with enhancements favoring space. Removing the gear knob and driveshaft allows for a large, ergonomic storage tunnel inspired by the Mustang Mach-E.
A standout feature is the 12.8-inch display with the latest SYNC system, offering a refreshed interface and full integration with FordPass for remote vehicle management. It retains wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa Built-in, enabling voice commands for scheduling or reminders.
The trunk space is also improved. Known for its Megabox, the Puma Gen-E now features a GigaBox, increasing the load capacity by 110 liters to a minimum of 566 liters—greater than many larger SUVs. Additionally, the front trunk (frunk), made possible by the absence of a gasoline engine, further boosts storage.
The Premium version boasts a B&O soundbar spanning most of the dashboard, another Mustang Mach-E-inspired feature that adds a distinctive touch.
Performance and range
Performance-wise, the electric Puma is the most powerful version, with 168 hp from a single electric motor, a top speed of 160 km/h, 290 Nm of torque, and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8 seconds. While a dual-motor variant (potentially a Puma ST Gen-E) hasn’t been confirmed, its efficiency stands out: 13.1 kWh/100 km—better than many smaller, lighter cars.
Battery capacity remains undisclosed, but Ford claims a mixed-cycle range of 376 km and 523 km in urban driving. While not class-leading, its DC fast-charging capability of up to 100 kW allows a 10-80% charge in 23 minutes, the fastest in its segment.
Safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Centering, which adjusts speed naturally, and Predictive Speed Assist, which adapts speed for curves, roundabouts, and junctions—typically found in higher-end cars.
Ford Puma Gen-E is quite ambitious
As noted, the Puma Gen-E is targeting the EX30, which costs about 38,000 DKK more in its base Core version. In comparison, the EX30 Core offers a WLTP range of 337 km and fewer tech features (the 476 km version costs over 310,000 DKK).
Other competitors include the Fiat 600e and Peugeot e-2008, with base prices nearing 300,000 DKK. The main rival might be the new Kia EV3, offering 434 km of range and modern ADAS for just 269,900 DKK.
Still, the Puma Gen-E stands out for being the most affordable in its class while offering superior space, load capacity, and competitive performance. The driving experience will reveal its true capabilities.
