Deezer, the popular music streaming platform, has revealed that more than 10.000 tracks created entirely with artificial intelligence (AI) are uploaded to its service every day. This staggering number accounts for approximately 10% of all daily uploads, underscoring the growing influence of AI in music creation.

A Pioneering Tool for AI Detection

The company announced the development of a cutting-edge tool designed to detect AI-generated music. According to Deezer, the technology was built to outperform existing tools by identifying generative content without requiring training on specific datasets. In December 2024, the platform filed two patent applications to safeguard the methodologies underpinning this innovative system.

This detection tool is capable of identifying music produced by advanced AI models such as Suno and Udio. Importantly, the system can adapt to new technologies as long as relevant data samples are available, ensuring its relevance in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Aurelien Herault, Deezer’s Chief Innovation Officer, explained, “Current tools on the market can be highly effective as long as they are trained on datasets from a specific generative AI model, but detection rates drop significantly when faced with new models or data. We tackled this challenge and created a tool that is far more robust and applicable to multiple models.”

While AI-generated content represents a growing share of uploads, Deezer highlighted that the majority of these tracks go unheard by users. However, the sheer volume risks diluting the catalog and enabling fraudulent activities.

Deezer’s CEO, Alexis Lanternier, emphasized the need for responsible use of AI in the music industry: “Generative AI has the potential to positively impact music creation and consumption, but its use must be guided by responsibility and care to safeguard the rights and revenues of artists and creators.”

To address these challenges, Lanternier outlined Deezer’s commitment to developing an AI content labeling system. This initiative aims to exclude AI-generated tracks from algorithmic and editorial recommendations. Looking ahead, the company also plans to expand its detection capabilities to identify vocal deepfakes.

A broader commitment to fairness in music

Deezer’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to promote a fair and sustainable music ecosystem. In October 2024, the company signed the global declaration against the unauthorized use of creative works for training generative models. This aligns with growing concerns over the economic impact of AI on the music industry, with projections estimating a 25% loss in revenue for music creators by 2028.

By pioneering tools for AI detection and advocating for ethical practices, Deezer is taking a proactive stance in navigating the challenges posed by generative AI. As the platform continues to innovate, it remains committed to protecting the interests of artists and preserving the integrity of its music catalog.
