Denmark is making a big change in its rail system. The country will replace old diesel trains with new battery-electric trains, which are better for the environment. This change will help reduce harmful emissions and make train travel more sustainable.
Upgrading the West Jutland railway line
A 67-kilometer stretch of track between Skjern and Holstebro in West Jutland (Vestjylland) will be the first to use these battery-electric trains. According to Banedanmark, work on the line starts on March 1.
To prepare for the new trains, many parts of the track need to be updated:
- Rails, Sleepers, and Ballast: “Skinner, sveller og ballast skal skiftes” to support the heavier battery-electric trains.
- Crossings and Platforms: Many level crossings and platforms will get new surfaces.
- Track Changes: Some tracks at stations will be changed to help trains run more smoothly.
During the upgrade, passengers will have to use train-buses until the work is finished.
Environmental benefits
The new battery-electric trains are much cleaner than diesel trains. They will reduce air pollution and help Denmark meet its environmental goals. This change is an important step towards a more sustainable transportation system.
Denmark’s upgrade of the West Jutland railway line (Vestjysk jernbanestrækning) is a pilot project. If successful, similar changes might happen on other lines.
