The BYD Seal 06 GT, the production version of the BYD Ocean-M Concept unveiled earlier this year in Beijing, has been spotted in the latest spy shots looking nearly production-ready. The Chinese automotive giant BYD will officially present the Seal 06 GT at the Chengdu Auto Show 2024, set to begin on August 30th.

On the same day, pre-sales will start in China, with deliveries expected to commence by the end of September. The European market, including Denmark, Sweden and Norway, is likely to see this model by 2025. While the car is currently referred to as the BYD Seal 06 GT, BYD has also registered other potential names such as Seal Mini, Seal 05 EV, and Seal X, suggesting that a name change might be possible at the official launch.

BYD has emphasized that this model is crucial in their strategic shift towards a more international focus, marking an important step in their global expansion.

Design and Powertrain of the BYD Seal 06 GT

The Seal 06 GT shares a similar front design with the existing Seal model but incorporates some distinct new elements. It is notably more compact, measuring 4.6 meters in length, positioning it as a direct competitor to models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The car is 1.8 meters wide and 1.4 meters tall.

Interior spy shots reveal that the Seal 06 GT will have features reminiscent of the Seal sedan, including sporty front seats, a floating central display on the dashboard, and an LCD instrument panel. The hatchback has been seen in several colors, including blue, black, green, and orange, indicating at least four color options. Depending on the trim level, the car will be equipped with either 18-inch or 19-inch wheels.

The base models of the Seal 06 GT will be powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 160 kW (218 hp) and paired with a 59.52 kWh battery, providing a CLTC range of 505 km. Higher-spec versions will feature a 165 kW (224 hp) motor and a larger 72.96 kWh battery, offering a range of 605 km. Finally, a dual-motor version will combine a 200 kW motor on the rear axle and a 110 kW motor on the front, delivering a total power output of 421 hp.

This version will also use the 72.96 kWh battery, with a range of 550 km. All battery packs are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) types, produced by BYD’s subsidiary FinDreams.

Platform and Technology

Like the Sea Lion 07 and the refreshed Seal models, the Seal 06 GT is built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 Evo, featuring 800 V architecture that enables ultra-fast charging. The vehicle is also expected to include BYD’s 12-in-1 electric drive system with a 23,000 rpm electric motor and possibly a DiSus-C continuous damping control suspension system.

The BYD Seal 06 GT is anticipated to play a key role in BYD’s expanding lineup, offering a competitive edge in the international market with its advanced technology and versatile design.
