In 2021, Ford broke new ground by transforming the Mustang name into an electric SUV with the launch of the Mustang Mach-E (here our last test drive). Now, its historic rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, is following suit, embracing an electrified future as a sleek SUV.

General Motors recently confirmed the development of this all-new model. The electric Camaro SUV will be built on GM’s advanced Ultium platform, which already underpins electric vehicles such as the Cadillac Lyriq, Celestiq, Optiq, and Escalade IQ, as well as the Chevrolet Blazer EV.

What we know about the Chevy Camaro SUV

Unlike Ford, which cntinues to produce the traditional gas-powered Mustang alongside its electric counterpart, GM appears to be sunsetting the internal combustion Camaro. This shift signals a significant change in direction for the iconic muscle car. The Camaro SUV aims to preserve the essence of its namesake while reinterpreting it as a modern, electric family-friendly vehicle.

While GM has yet to release performance specifications, the SUV’s size is expected to straddle the line between compact and mid-size, depending on the market perspective. For European audiences, it could feel substantial, while for American consumers, its dimensions might align with vehicles like Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, measuring around 4.7 meters in length.

Initial pricing estimates suggest the Camaro SUV will range from approximately $50,000 for the base model to $70,000 for high-end trims. GM plans to equip the vehicle with advanced charging capabilities and large battery packs, promising competitive range and performance in the growing electric SUV market.
