The number of high school students in Denmark choosing bicycles as their primary mode of transportation has dropped significantly. According to Cyklistforbundet (Danish Cyclists’ Federation), cycling trips among students in youth education programs have declined by 40% since 2010. This trend raises concerns about its impact on public health, the environment, and urban traffic congestion. The decline in cycling coincides with a growing preference for cars among Danish teenagers. As more students gain access to automobiles, cycling is increasingly being replaced by driving. This shift contradicts Denmark’s reputation as a leading cycling nation and poses challenges in reducing carbon emissions and promoting an active lifestyle.

The ‘Fælles-Tour’ campaign: encouraging students to cycle again

To counter this trend, Cyklistforbundet and Denmark’s five Regions have launched the ‘Fælles-Tour’ campaign (Fælles-Tour). Running from March 24 to April 6, 2025, the initiative incentivizes students to use bicycles for their daily commutes by offering prizes such as electric bikes and concert tickets. The campaign seeks to make cycling more appealing and accessible, encouraging students to rediscover its benefits.

Health and environmental benefits of cycling

Cycling contributes to better cardiovascular health, lower pollution levels, and reduced urban congestion. Studies show that students who cycle to school are generally fitter and healthier than those who commute by car. Additionally, cycling supports Denmark’s environmental goals by cutting down on emissions from short-distance car trips. Danish authorities recognize the importance of reversing this trend. Anders G. Christensen (V), chairman of the committee for regional development and EU in Danske Regioner (Danish Regions), emphasized the collective responsibility to promote cycling. “
Cycling benefits public health, the environment, and reduces traffic congestion. We are proud to support the Fælles-Tour for the second year in a row,” he stated.

A call to action for schools and students

The ‘Fælles-Tour’ campaign (Fælles-Tour) is open to all high schools and youth education institutions across Denmark. Schools are encouraged to participate actively, while students have the chance to win individual and group prizes based on their cycling activity. The hope is that by making cycling fun and rewarding, more young people will opt for the two-wheeled commute.

Reaffirming Denmark’s cycling culture

Denmark has long been a global leader in cycling infrastructure and culture. However, the declining trend among young people signals a need for renewed efforts. With initiatives like ‘Fælles-Tour’ (Fælles-Tour), Danish organizations and regional governments are working together to ensure that cycling remains a core part of everyday life for future generations.
