The shift towards electric mobility in Denmark has reached a new milestone. In February 2025, a record-breaking 66.5% of all newly registered cars were electric, signaling a decisive move away from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. Out of the 11,616 new cars sold in the month, an impressive 7,723 were electric, further cementing Denmark’s position as a leader in green transportation.
Private buyers embrace the Electric Revolution
While businesses and leasing firms have been early adopters of electric vehicles, the latest figures indicate a strong shift among private buyers as well. According to bilstatistik.dk, 80% of all new private car purchases in February were electric. This demonstrates that EV adoption is no longer limited to fleet and corporate buyers but has become a mainstream choice for individual consumers.
Under the current tax framework, several popular electric vehicles are expected to become considerably more expensive in 2026. This has raised concerns about whether Denmark can maintain its strong EV adoption rate. However, political leaders are already addressing the issue.
In a statement to TV 2 in January, Danish Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund acknowledged the challenge:
“The EV breakthrough in 2024 has been remarkable, and I agree that the planned tax increases for 2026 are too steep. The government is committed to ensuring that electric cars remain an attractive option for Danish consumers.”
