Chinese automaker GAC has long expressed ambitions to enter the European market, and they are now taking another step forward. Following the launch of their new electric crossover, the GAC Aion V, GAC introduces a model seemingly tailored to European buyers’ preferences. Meet the GAC Aion UT, an electric hatchback comparable in size to the VW ID.3 and MG4 (read our test here).
The GAC Aion UT fits into what’s traditionally known as the compact car or “Golf” class. With its compact dimensions—slightly over 4 meters in length and 1.5 meters in height—it matches the proportions of competitors like the VW ID.3, MG4, Cupra Born, and BYD Dolphin. In terms of design, the Aion UT draws clear parallels to the ID.3, likely one of its primary targets.
Possibly the most affordable EV in its segment?
In China, the Aion UT is priced surprisingly low. For comparison, the entry-level MG4 starts at under DKK 210,000 in Denmark with a 49 kWh battery.
While GAC has not yet revealed the battery capacity of the Aion UT, we know it will initially feature a single electric motor delivering 136 hp. If the model enters the European market, it will likely need a larger battery to compete with the established players.
Will it come to Europe?
Although it has not yet been confirmed whether the Aion UT will reach European shores, it’s clear that GAC is actively preparing for the market. Next year, their electric SUV, the Aion V, is expected to officially launch in Europe.
We look forward to learning more about the Aion UT and GAC’s other models. Can the Chinese manufacturer once again deliver a price-competitive alternative to established European brands? It will be exciting to follow this development closely.
