Hyundai is expanding its SUV lineup with the introduction of the Hyundai Inster, a fully electric version of the Casper subcompact crossover.
This new model, featuring a stretched wheelbase and more standard technology inside the cabin, will be available globally, unlike the Casper which is only sold in Korea. The Inster is made to compete with european cheap EV cars, like Citroen e-C3, the Dacia Spring (not available in Denmark) and the brand new Fiat Grande Panda.
All about new Hyundai Inster
The Inster retains much of the Casper’s 2021 design but incorporates unique electric features to set itself apart. These include modified bumpers, a choice of 15″ or 17″ wheels, and enhanced LED lights at the front and rear. The Inster is also significantly larger, measuring 230 mm longer and with a wheelbase extended by 180 mm.
Despite its increased size, the Inster remains compact with dimensions of 3,825 mm in length, 1,610 mm in width, and 1,575 mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. Hyundai has also announced an Inster Cross variant, which will feature a more rugged, outdoor-oriented design.
The Inster will come with two electric powertrain options: Standard and Long Range. The Standard model features a single electric motor with 97 hp and 147 Nm, powered by a 42 kWh battery, providing a range of over 300 km per charge. The Long Range version offers a more powerful 115 hp motor and a 49 kWh battery, targeting a WLTP range of 355 km .
Equipped with 120 kW DC fast charging (the faster in its category) the Inster can charge from 10-80% in 30 minutes. Using an 11 kW AC outlet, a full charge takes 4 hours for the Standard model and 4 hours and 35 minutes for the Long Range model. Additionally, the V2L function allows for bi-directional charging of other devices like e-bikes and camping gear.
Interiors
The interior of the Inster largely mirrors that of the ICE-powered Casper but includes technological upgrades and new color options for the cloth upholstery. The digital cockpit boasts dual 10.25-inch displays, a notable increase in size compared to the Casper.
Depending on the trim, the Inster offers features such as a wireless charging dock, 64-color LED ambient lighting, heated front seats, a sunroof, and a comprehensive suite of ADAS features. The seats can be folded flat, with the second row sliding and reclining, and an optional front bench. The boot space ranges from 280 liters to 351 liters.
The Hyundai Inster will debut at the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show and will go on sale in Korea this summer, with a gradual rollout in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific to follow. Pricing will be announced later, but the Inster is expected to be Hyundai’s most affordable EV offering, given its size and market positioning.
