Apple drops the “SE” name, which characterized the first four versions of its most affordable smartphone. According to the latest rumors from Weibo and the Majin Bu profile on X, the new generation will be called iPhone 16E.

According to sources, Apple aims to bring order to its lineup and elevate the perception of the model by making it feel part of the latest 16 series.

A new design

It’s not just the name that’s changing, but finally, the design as well. After the last disappointing generation, still based on the iPhone 8, the iPhone 16E will adopt the design of the iPhone 14. Among the leaked specifications, the following stand out:

    • 6.1-inch OLED display for more vivid colors and contrasts;
    • Face ID, marking the complete abandonment of Touch ID on Apple smartphones (at least for now);
    • 48 MP rear camera, a novelty for a budget-friendly device;
    • USB-C port, aligning with the latest models;
    • Apple’s in-house 5G modem;
    • A next-generation processor (possibly the A18) and 8 GB of RAM, delivering significantly better performance compared to the previous model;
    • Action Button, a feature introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro that could expand interface customization.

Pricing and Availability

These updates make the iPhone 16E a device that’s not only budget-friendly but also competitive for those seeking high performance without breaking the bank. However, its price might not remain aligned with the previous iPhone SE models. The base price in the U.S. is expected to be around $499, while in Europe, it could range between 4000-5000 DKK or  €600 and €700.

The official debut is anticipated for March 2025, when Apple will confirm—or deny—these rumors.
