We just talked about Mazda’s design regarding the CX-80, and in Beijing, the Japanese manufacturer once again captivates with the Mazda EZ-6, the new and first electric sedan, the second model after the MX-30.
Made in collaboration with Changan, it is based on the Deepal SL03 but with a significantly better design. It is not clear whether it will also be sold outside of China, but if it is, it could be an interesting successor to the Mazda 6, both in electric-only and R-EV versions, just like the MX-30.
Mazda EZ-6: the new evolution of Kodo
There are some common elements with the Deepal from which it derives, but it’s not a case of rebranding. Because the Mazda EZ-6 has all the personality of a Mazda, especially noticeable at the front with the typical large grille of the brand, here closed and with a 3D pattern being an electric vehicle.
Also, at the rear, the typical Mazda styling returns: while it’s true that the LED taillight cluster is now joined in the center with the Mazda lettering in spaced characters, the design takes cues from the CX-5, with semi-circular LEDs on a bronzed background.
Inside, however, the similarities with the Changan vehicle are more evident, as it inherits all the technological features, especially the large 14.6-inch central touchscreen display, which is quite unique compared to other vehicles, as well as the flat-bottom steering wheel. Beyond this, there seems to be more attention to detail in the finishing.
There’s also a wireless smartphone charging pad, two cupholders, a Sony audio system, and a “zero gravity” seat for the front passenger. Functions seem to be controlled almost exclusively through the screen or voice command.
The engine is also customized
So far, there is no news about the powertrains. However, it is likely that the Mazda EZ-6 will have a configuration comparable to the Deepal SL03 with some significant differences.
For the Range Extender version, this means a 1.5-liter engine as an extender and a rear-mounted electric motor with a maximum power of 237 hp and torque of 320 Nm. However, the Mazda EZ-6 could use a proprietary engine as a range extender, perhaps the same rotary engine.
All fully electric versions of the Deepal SL03 are equipped with a 160 or 190 kW motor on the rear axle. It is possible that Mazda will have more powerful engines or even introduce a dual-motor version in line with Mazda’s sportier image.
