Unveiled in recent weeks, the MG3 Hybrid+ marks a new era for the British brand’s compact car segment, being the first time it’s sold outside of the UK and its debut as a hybrid vehicle, while the previous generation was exclusively available to British customers in Europe.
This new iteration heralds significant changes. It not only grows in size but also adopts a design more reminiscent of the flagship MG7, which is currently not slated for release in Europe. Additionally, it’s the first MG to feature full hybrid technology, drawing inspiration from models like the Toyota Yaris (read our test), or the Renault Clio E-Tech, the only other cars in this segment with such a powertrain.
Design of the MG3 Hybrid+
The MG3 Hybrid+ boasts a modern aesthetic, a hallmark of all MG vehicles, and remains proudly designed in the UK.
Numerous design cues draw parallels to the MG7, particularly in the elongated and pointed front end, featuring slim LED headlights positioned at the sides. Its sinuous forms, coupled with distinct contours, emphasize its sporty appeal, complemented by a short rear, and sophisticated LED taillights with a intricate pattern, ensuring accessibility for luggage with a class-leading trunk capacity.
Available in a range of vibrant colors such as St. Moritz Blue, York White, Flaming Red, Morning Yellow, Pearl Black, Blade Silver, and Hampstead Grey, the MG3 Hybrid+ targets a youthful demographic.
Interior Features
Offered in three variants—Standard, Comfort, and Luxury—the interior takes cues from the MG4 in terms of design and technological features, maximizing space utilization.
Features like the two-spoke steering wheel design, ample storage compartments in the center tunnel and door panels, and high-quality finishes promise a compelling value proposition.
The dual-screen setup, borrowed from the MG4, sees improvements with a 7-inch digital cockpit display behind the steering wheel and a responsive 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Piano-style controls enhance safety and convenience during driving.
Standard equipment includes climate control, Bluetooth audio system, four USB ports, rear parking sensors, and a camera.
Higher trim levels add leather-free upholstery, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a 360° camera system. The MG iSmart connectivity system offers advanced connectivity features akin to higher-end vehicles.
Efficiency and Safety
The MG3 Hybrid+ comes equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), featuring MG Pilot with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and traffic assist systems.
Innovative technology extends to the powertrain, marking MG’s first non-plug-in hybrid vehicle. Comprising five key elements—internal combustion engine, transmission, battery, electric motor, and generator—the hybrid system delivers impressive efficiency, with a claimed fuel consumption of 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers, while ensuring powerful performance.
The combined power output reaches an impressive 197 horsepower, making it one of the most potent offerings in its category. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 8 seconds, with a swift 80 to 120 km/h acceleration in just 5 seconds.
This performance is attributed to the 102-horsepower 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a more potent 136-horsepower electric motor, supplemented by a separate generator for optimizing regenerative braking.
The hybrid system offers various driving modes:
- EV mode for electric-only driving based on battery charge
- Series mode where the internal combustion engine powers the generator to supply energy to the electric motor
- Series and Charge mode for series driving while the generator charges the battery if depleted
- Parallel mode where both the petrol engine and electric motor provide power to the wheels
Driving modes include Eco, Standard, and Sport, each calibrated to offer a balance between fuel efficiency and performance.
Enhanced Driving Experience
The MG3 Hybrid+ delivers a dynamic driving experience with a sport-tuned suspension designed for comfort and agility. Its robust chassis, fortified with new rigid components, ensures enhanced safety.
The suspension system is engineered to reduce weight and improve grip, while sound-absorbing materials and transmission refinement minimize noise levels, vibrations, and aerodynamic noise.
