Chinese battery giant CATL is doubling down on its commitment to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) industry with an ambitious focus on battery swapping. In 2022, CATL introduced its Evogo brand, which encompasses modular batteries, swapping stations, and an app-based service.

Now, the company has unveiled the next evolution of this initiative with two new modular batteries—Choco-SEB #20 and Choco-SEB #25—marking a significant step forward in the battery swap ecosystem.

From 1,000 to 30,000 Battery Swap Stations

CATL’s founder and CEO, Robin Zheng, recently announced a bold expansion plan. By 2025, the company aims to establish 1,000 battery swap stations, with a long-term target of reaching 30,000 stations. The initial phase will see CATL itself building the first stations, while partnerships will drive the rollout of the remaining 20,000.

The swapping stations are designed to be highly efficient, capable of storing 14 to 30 batteries and performing a swap in just 110 seconds. This technology will accommodate vehicles with wheelbases ranging from 2.55 to 3.1 meters, covering a wide range of small and compact EVs.

According to Zheng, CATL envisions battery swapping as more than just a business opportunity; it’s a cornerstone of sustainable development. “Battery swapping is not just CATL’s commitment but also a shared responsibility of those who want to promote sustainable development,” Zheng stated. Through the Choco-Swap ecosystem, CATL aims to foster collaboration and drive innovation across the industry. By 2030, the company estimates that battery swapping will fulfill one-third of the energy demand for electric vehicles.

The Choco-SEB batteries: flexible and powerful

The newly launched Choco-SEB #20 and #25 batteries are tailored for small and compact EVs, offering flexibility in energy density and chemistry:

  • Choco-SEB #20:
    • Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP): 42 kWh
    • Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC): 52 kWh
  • Choco-SEB #25:
    • LFP: 56 kWh
    • NMC: 70 kWh

These batteries provide drivers with options suited to their driving habits and needs, while also supporting subscription-based pricing plans. Monthly plans range from 369 to 599 yuan (€48 to €79), with options for limited or unlimited mileage.

To ensure widespread adoption, CATL has already announced ten compatible vehicle models for the Choco-SEB batteries and swapping system. The battery swap service has seen remarkable success in China, but it remains in its infancy in Europe. Despite the slower uptake in European markets, CATL is optimistic about the long-term prospects.
