Cars from the VAG group are often launched in sync when new models are presented. However, there was an exception in 2020 when VW introduced its electric ID.3, with only Cupra following suit and launching the Cupra Born (previous Seat El Born) as a sibling model to the ID.3. Now, after nearly four years, Škoda has finally launched its own compact electric car, the new Skoda Elroq.
Larger than the two other siblings
The Elroq is a new crossover based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture, which is also used by the Audi Q4, Cupra Born, and Volkswagen ID.3, as well by the new Ford Explorer and Capri.
It has been extended to 4.49 meters, making it slightly larger than the Karoq (4.39 meters) but significantly smaller than the Enyaq (4.65 meters). While it is not a direct sibling model to the ID.3 and Born, the Elroq is more of an SUV than a hatchback. Škoda aims to compete with the Volvo EX30, Jeep Avenger, Hyundai Kona Electric, and the upcoming Kia EV3.
The Elroq will be available with four electric drivetrains: Elroq 50, 60, 85, and 85x. The top model, Elroq 85x, features all-wheel drive with two motors, delivering up to 299 hp (285 hp in the 85). The car is expected to have a maximum range of up to 560 km on a single charge, thanks to its 77 kWh battery. Alternatively, it is available with either a 55 kWh battery or a 63 kWh battery. The two mentioned models are rear-wheel drive. The smallest version delivers 170 hp, while the next one offers 204 hp.
The largest battery model supports fast charging with 175 kW DC, allowing the car to charge from 10% to 80% in under 28 minutes. Additionally, it includes an 11 kW AC charger for home use.
Variant | Battery Capacity (net/gross) | Range (WLTP) | Power | Charging (DC max) | Charging Time hp (10-80%) HP |
Elroq 50 | 52 kWh / 55 kWh | 315 km | 125 kW | 145 kW | 25 minutes 170 |
Elroq 60 | 59 kWh / 63 kWh | 319 km | 150 kW | 165 kW | 24 minutes 204 |
Elroq 85 | 77 kWh / 82 kWh | 560 km | 210 kW | 175 kW | 28 minutes 285 |
Elroq 85x | 77 kWh / 82 kWh | 550 km | 220 kW (AWD) | 175 kW | 28 minutes 299 |
Design-wise, the Elroq will introduce Škoda’s new “Modern Solid” design theme, providing a robust and functional appearance with advanced LED lighting and Škoda’s new “Tech-Deck-Face” sensor unit.
Despite its compact size, it offers impressive trunk capacity of up to 1,580 liters with the rear seats folded down. With both rear seats up, it has 470 liters of trunk space, where the ELROQ smartly stores the charging cable in a small net under the parcel shelf.
A familiar cabin
Inside, the Elroq draws clear inspiration from the Enyaq, with no significant changes for those used to driving it. It features a 13-inch infotainment screen and physical buttons for various functions, which were introduced in the new electric cars from the VAG Group. T
he interior focuses on sustainability, with three-quarters of the Loft trim covered in recycled PET, while the more expensive Lodge trim is 75% made from Econyl, a nylon material made from fishing nets and waste carpets. The rear seating area is better than many competitors, and like a typical Škoda, there is also an umbrella stored in the door pocket.
The new Škoda Elroq has the potential to become a success, especially due to its size and spaciousness. It offers impressive legroom and trunk capacity, making it attractive for families seeking practical solutions. Its range and fast charging also promise good performance. Prices in Denmark start from DKK 249,999, with the Elroq being launched in two equipment variants: First Edition and Sportsline.
