According to Autosport, Sergio Perez will remain Max Verstappen’s teammate at the Red Bull Formula 1 team after the summer break. The future of the Mexican driver was a key topic during a team leadership meeting on Monday, which included team principal Christian Horner and Helmut Marko.
Despite rumors suggesting his departure, Autosport reports that Horner has informed team staff at the Milton Keynes factory that Perez will be driving the car when the 2024 season resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August.
Challenging Season for Perez
While Verstappen has already secured seven Grand Prix victories this season, Perez has struggled to achieve performances worthy of the world champion RB20. The car’s performance dip and Perez’s ongoing difficulties since May have allowed McLaren to close in on the constructors’ championship race, with the Woking-based team now just 42 points behind Red Bull.
The decision to retain Perez highlights Red Bull’s confidence in his abilities to support their championship campaign, despite the challenges he has faced. The team’s management appears committed to maintaining stability and continuity as they aim to fend off McLaren and secure another constructors’ title.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Perez to see if he can overcome his recent struggles and contribute crucial points to Red Bull’s title defense. With the Dutch Grand Prix marking the start of the season’s second half, Perez will have the opportunity to prove his worth alongside the dominant Verstappen.
