In Denmark, we have yet to see much of the new generation of electric Smart cars. In Europe, there are three models in the series: the #1, #3, and now the larger SUV, the Smart #5 – and we’re also waiting for Smart’s first MPV.
But what makes the #5 an exciting development for both Smart and consumers?
The Largest Smart to Date
The Smart #5 is the largest model from Smart so far, with a length of 4,705 mm. This SUV shares many technical components with other cars from the Geely group, which includes brands like Zeekr, Polestar, and Volvo.
Although it cannot accommodate seven passengers like some larger SUVs, it still offers space for five people with comfort and style.
800-Volt Technology and Rapid Charging
Although all technical specifications have not yet been released, we know that the Smart #5 is equipped with an 800-volt platform, enabling extremely fast charging. It uses Geely’s new 100 kWh battery with a supercharging function (4C), allowing it to charge up to 80% of the battery’s capacity in 15 minutes (from 10% to 80%).
This gives the car an impressive range of over 740 km according to the Chinese measurement method (CLTC). However, when measured according to the European WLTP standard, the figure is expected to be slightly lower.
The Smart #5 is offered in China with both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive, with a system output ranging between 340 hp, 370 hp, and 422 hp. Additionally, the car has several driving modes for both on-road and off-road conditions, such as Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock, providing the driver with maximum control in various driving scenarios.
A Leap in the Cabin
The cabin of the Smart #5 is designed with flexibility and comfort in mind. The seats can be folded down to create a sleeping area suitable for anything from a king-size bed to a single bed.
There are also 34 storage compartments, a frunk, and a spacious rear trunk with a capacity of 1,530 liters of luggage.
The interior is also thoroughly luxurious, featuring premium leather, oak panels, and zero-gravity front seats that can recline up to 121 degrees. An ambient lighting system with 256 colors and a 21-speaker Sennheiser sound system completes the experience.
While the interior of the Smart #5 is elegant, it’s the advanced technology that truly steals the show. The car is equipped with a 10.3” digital instrument cluster and two 13” screens, one of which functions as the infotainment system.
The infotainment system features a lion avatar named Leo and includes an advanced generative AI voice assistant that can provide precise answers to almost any question. Additionally, the car has a 25.6” augmented reality head-up display, enhancing the driver’s awareness.
Will We See This Smart in Denmark?
The Smart #5 is expected to be launched in Europe soon, but it remains uncertain whether it will be available in Denmark. If it does, it will be a strong competitor to models like the Mercedes EQB and BMW iX3.
Unfortunately, we have not yet seen the other Smart models, the #1 and #3, in Denmark, but there is hope that the #5 could be the first to make its way onto Danish roads.
