Volkswagen has revealed the first details of its upcoming budget-friendly electric city car, set to debut in 2027. Positioned below the ID. 2all, this new model aims to make electric mobility accessible at an even lower price point, offering a starting price of around 20,000 euros (ca. 150,000 DKK).

The German automaker has also outlined its production goals for the Wolfsburg plant, which will play a crucial role in Volkswagen’s electrification strategy.

A concept preview in March 2025

A full unveiling of the concept car is scheduled for March 2025, providing a first look at what could be named the Volkswagen ID.1. The final production model will be officially presented in 2027 before entering the market, offering a more affordable alternative to the ID. 2all—a 4-meter-long compact EV with a price tag below 25,000 euros and set to launch in 2026.

The first teaser of this entry-level electric model emerged during a meeting between Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer and Wolfsburg plant employees. The factory, which will produce the future electric Golf and T-Roc, will transition to the Scalable Systems Platform. This advanced platform will unify software architecture across all Volkswagen models, streamlining production and technological development.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen plans to shift production of the combustion and hybrid Golf to Mexico, ensuring that Wolfsburg remains focused on the next-generation electric vehicles. With an estimated annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the plant will manufacture key models like the electric Golf and T-Roc.

The ID.1 will share its MEB Entry platform with the ID. 2all, but Volkswagen must implement further cost reductions to reach the ambitious 20,000-euprice target. One of the primary strategies to achieve this involves optimizing battery technology, potentially utilizing LFP chemistry, which is more cost-effective than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Volkswagen’s future Plan 2030

Volkswagen’s broader industrial roadmap, dubbed Future Plan 2030, consists of three phases:

  1. Accelerate – Aims to close the competitive gap with other automakers by reducing costs and expanding the product lineup.
  2. Attack – Focuses on launching nine new models by 2027, including the ID. 2all and ID.1.
  3. Achieve – Seeks to establish Volkswagen as a technological leader in the mass-market EV segment.

Wolfsburg’s Role

Following intense labor negotiations in December, Volkswagen has embarked on the most ambitious transformation plan in its history. CEO Schaefer reiterated the company’s commitment to making electric mobility appealing to a broader audience, reinforcing the brand’s mission to lead the mass-market EV revolution.

Over the next few years, the Wolfsburg plant will continue evolving while maintaining high production volumes. With the future electric Golf and T-Roc expected to exceed 500,000 units annually, the factory secures its place as a key pillar in Volkswagen’s electrification strategy—continuing the legacy of the Golf, which has been synonymous with Wolfsburg for over 50 years.
