Not only the new Volvo XC90. During the launch event in Gothenburg, the Swedish automaker surprised the audience with a brief video showcasing the YouTube app in the XC90’s new infotainment system opening to reveal a teaser of the long-awaited Volvo ES90, an all-electric flagship sedan.

Expected in 2025, the Volvo ES90 will be the first electric sedan of the Swedish brand and the new flagship sedan together with Volvo S90, which will be maybe refreshed as well the XC90.

Volvo ES90: what we know

The name “Volvo ES90” has now been confirmed for the vehicle, which had previously been referred to under the project codename “V551 First VP” (where “VP” stands for Verification Prototype). This codename had even appeared in photos from Volvo employees at the Geely factory in Chengdu, China, where the ES90 will be probably built.

The teaser, although short, gave a glimpse of the car’s silhouette, offering a clear look at its distinctive design. The front pillar was notably pronounced, while the rear featured a sleek, sloping tail section. The overall configuration seemed to suggest a five-door design, evoking comparisons to the Polestar 5 concept, which was showcased earlier at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

While the ES90 may bear some resemblance to the Polestar 5 in terms of form factor, its powertrain and specifications are expected to differ significantly. The ES90 will be built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the same architecture used for the newly introduced EX90 SUV.

That means we can expect the same configurations: a 279 HP single motor version with a 104 kWh battery, and a 408 HP twin motor version with a 111 kWh battery. We can also think about a Twin Motor Performance version with 517 HP.

In terms of dimensions, the ES90 is expected to measure 4.99 meters in length, 1.54 meters in height, and 1.94 meters in width, with a wheelbase exceeding 3 meters (3.1 meters to be exact). This large footprint places it in the full-size luxury sedan category.

700 km of Range?

As we said The ES90 will likely feature a battery pack with a nominal capacity of 111 kWh, with 107 kWh usable.

One of the most anticipated features is the potential range. With an aerodynamic design aimed at reducing drag (with a focus on achieving a low drag coefficient), Volvo is targeting an impressive 600 km of range on a full charge on the EX90, according to homologation standards. That means could be even 700 on the ES90, and this would position the flagship sedan as a strong competitor in the premium electric sedan market.

March 2025: The Official Reveal

While there is still much speculation about the finer details of the ES90, Volvo has confirmed that the official unveiling will take place in March 2025. The ES90 will compete directly with other luxury electric sedans, such as the Mercedes EQE, Audi A6 e-tron, and BMW i5, further intensifying the competition in the electric vehicle market.
