The 2024 update for the Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge involves a name change: from this year they are respectively called Volvo EX40 and Volvo EC40, a nomenclature that varies only for the electric versions. This means that the internal combustion engine version continues to be called Volvo XC40.
The choice is due to the Swedish manufacturer’s desire to standardize the names of its now extensive electric range, which therefore includes EX30, EX90, and EM90; as well as the brand’s direction to produce only electric cars by 2030.
Volvo EX40 and Volvo EC40: why the name change?
Volvo’s choice is aimed first of all at removing the Recharge badge from its entire range, a badge that was introduced in 2020 with the launch of the electric XC40, its first battery model, in Milan 4 years ago.
Subsequently, Recharge concerned the entire brand’s BEV and plug-in hybrid range, but with the arrival of the EX90 and therefore the clear direction, according to the brand, it is no longer needed.
For this reason, even plug-in hybrid models, such as the V60 or the new XC60 expected for this year, and not just electric ones.
Hybrid models will be indicated with the classic T6 or T8 depending on the power.
Volvo has indeed stated that in 2023 electric models represented 16% of its global sales, and expects that in 2024, thanks to the arrival of the EX90, after its delays; and especially of the EX30, the percentage is destined to grow.
More powerful
It’s not just a name change, but also some technical changes.
In fact, the more powerful Volvo EX40 and Volvo EC40, i.e., in the Twin Motor variants, will enjoy the new Performance pack distributed via software during the year, in some markets.
This is an increase of 25 kW or 33 HP designed for greater acceleration, and which also includes a dedicated pedal mapping for a quicker throttle response, and the Performance driving mode to fully exploit all 442 HP of power.
The update can be downloaded as an option through the official Volvo Cars app for those ordering a new car, but it will also be available for owners of C40 and XC40 Recharge pre-model year, who can always purchase it via the web.
Furthermore, Volvo EX40, EC40, and XC40 are now available in Black Edition, following what was seen on the XC60 Black Edition of 2023. This special edition sees the models tinted in Black Onyx, with glossy black badges and 20-inch 5-spoke wheels also in gloss black.
Inside, you can choose between microtech or textile carbon.
News also for XC60 and XC90
In addition to EX40 and EC40, there is news for the hybrid engines of XC60 and XC90.
The two mild hybrid SUVs now adopt a more efficient engine, with reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel savings of up to 4% on the XC60 and up to 2% on the XC90, on the WLTP cycle.
