Volvo EX90 was supposed to be the next chapter of Volvo XC90. But at the moment, the two models will be the 2 brand’s flagship, due to the last challenges of the electric vehicles.

That’s why Volvo organized the 90/90 event on September 4th, 2024, dedicated both to the new EX90 and the new hybrid Volvo XC90 (an hard restyling of the XC90, but still based on the same platform) and also to 2 more “surprises”.

What to expect from the new Volvo XC90

The second generation of the Volvo XC90 was originally launched in 2014, with a subsequent update in 2019. The upcoming 2025 version is expected to feature exterior modifications and a revamped interior, with design elements from the EX90. As a large SUV, the new XC90 will likely see mechanical upgrades that further emphasize electrification, alongside the integration of Volvo’s latest safety technologies.

A teaser released by Volvo reveals that the new XC90 will feature a more sculpted and sharper hood compared to the EX90, with headlights that, while distinct, retain the signature graphic elements of the Swedish brand.

The EX90, Volvo’s fully electric SUV, was unveiled in November 2022, but production was delayed until June 2024 due to software issues. Despite the introduction of the new hybrid XC90, Volvo is confident that it will not cannibalize sales of the EX90, as the two models are aimed at different market segments. It remains unclear whether the new XC90 will be offered as a mild hybrid (like the XC40) or if Volvo, under the ownership of Geely, will opt for an exclusively plug-in hybrid range.

In addition to the launch of the new XC90, Volvo has promised that the 90/90 Day event will be a significant occasion, marking the official debut of the EX90. The automaker has also hinted at “one or two surprises,” sparking curiosity about what else might be revealed.
